Essential Navigation for Small Craft

Course Information

The course is entirely shore-based. No boats are used.

This is an introductory course for anybody who is currently boating or interested in the basics of navigating safely at sea. You will learn how to:

  1. Read and interpret charts, publications and terms, identify distances, plot positions, determine course to steer and more.
  2. Learn how to read and interpret buoyage both day and night.
  3. Create passage plans and navigate using charts and electronic navigational aids
  4. Be able to interpret weather forecasts, tide tables, source information and plan accordingly.
  5. Understand and comply with IRPCS.

This course is ideal for those who have just completed their Start Sailing or Keelboat Level 1 Practical Courses or the National Powerboat Course (Level 2).   This course satisfies the navigation and theory pre-requisites for the Irish Sailing Intermediate Powerboating and Advanced Powerboating Certificate.

Next Course Details

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to safely navigate a vessel by day and by night in coastal waters with which they are familiar. ​

The course is certified by Irish Sailing and will teach you all the fundamental navigational skills needed to safely operate a boat on longer trips away from base.

Duration:     The course runs over 1 full day, and 2 evenings
