Course Information

This 1 day First Aid at Sea course is created especially for keel boat sailors, sailing instructors, open water swimming groups and anybody who uses the sea. The course includes CPR, cold water shock, hypothermia and drowning.

Jo has created this course, drawing on her experience of many years, living, working and teaching medical care on yachts.

The course meets the first aid training requirements of Irish Sailing and the RYA for sailing instructors, and for the Irish Sailing and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore first aid component. It also meets the requirement for the senior first aid certificate for offshore racers subject to ISAF regulations on first aid training (OSR 4.08.4) and is particularly appropriate for participants in ISORA, RORC races e.g. Dunlaoghaire to Dingle, Round Ireland and Fastnet races.

Certification
On successful completion of the course, candidates will receive a Remote Emergency Care (REC 1) certificate, which is valid for 2 years.

Course content includes:

How to use contents of common first aid kits..

Accident assessment

Dealing with emergency situations whilst at sea, (especially in confined spaces)

Dealing with unconscious casualties

Basic life support & AED use

Concussion awareness

Choking and breathing problems

Treating serious bleeding and treatment of shock

Fractures, sprains, dislocations

Common medical emergencies, including asthma, diabetes

Drowning, near drowning, cold water shock, immersion hypothermia

Burns and scalds
